Our course levels

Target Language Communication’s course levels are based on the language competence levels defined by the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR is becoming increasingly important for the development of curricula, textbooks and examinations throughout Europe, enabling language learners to assess and compare different course levels, qualifications and diplomas.

Basic level – A1

Basic level 1 courses are intended for students who really want to learn a language from the beginning; you therefore do not need any previous knowledge for these courses.
The basic level 2 and 3 courses then build on this basic knowledge and are also suitable for participants who have already attended beginner courses and would like to start again.

Advanced beginner level – A2

If you

  • can understand words and phrases (from topics such as introducing yourself and others) in the foreign language,
  • ask and answer simple questions when your conversation partner speaks slowly and clearly and repeats himself/herself if necessary or helps you when you are looking for words,

you should attend an advanced beginner level course.

Intermediate level – B1

If you

  • can understand short, clear messages and exchange simple information about things that are important to you (family, work, local area),
  • can generally cope well in routine, predictable situations that you encounter when traveling in the language area,

you should attend an intermediate level course.

Upper level – B2

If you

  • can talk spontaneously about topics that interest you or are familiar to you from your everyday life,
  • can understand the main points in TV programs (e.g. news) and films, provided that they are spoken clearly and you are familiar with the topic,
  • can cope with most situations when traveling in the language area,

you should attend an upper level course.

Perfecting – C1/C2

If you

  • can understand feature films and news programs on any topic, provided that standard language is used,
  • can read articles and literary texts,
  • can defend your own point of view in a discussion,
  • can converse fluently with a native speaker,

you should attend a perfection level course.
